When an employee joins Selective, we offer variety and flexibility in healthcare benefit options to the employee and their eligible dependents.  Our comprehensive health benefits, as well as our health and wellness programs, continually evolve to reflect the latest, most progressive thinking in the industry.  We invite you to explore our benefit options further by viewing the links below.

Selective offers two medical coverage options through Aetna’s national network to meet the changing needs of you and your family.

Aetna Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)
This health care option allows you to decide if you’ll receive care through Aetna’s network of participating providers or go outside the network. You are not required to select a primary care physician or get referrals to see specialists.

Aetna’s Consumer Directed Healthcare Plan (HRA)
This health care option takes a different approach, giving employees greater control over how their health care dollars are spent. This plan combines a high deductible with insurance coverage, along with a health reimbursement account. This high deductible healthcare option is partially funded by Selective through a healthcare reimbursement account. Provided you remain employed with Selective, any unused HRA funds carry over to the next year. Aetna’s participating providers with their discounts are also available under this option, as are out-of-network providers who are reimbursed at a lesser percentage of reasonable and customary charges. Referrals are not required, and the plan encourages you to take greater control over your healthcare purchases.

Both medical coverage options offer you the following services:

Aetna Navigator
You can use the Aetna Navigator, an extensive web-based tool, to explore Aetna’s nationwide listing of in-network providers, research health issues, review your account, get forms and much more. There’s even an Informed Health Line available 24/7 that allows you to speak directly with a registered nurse.

Simple Steps

Aetna’s Simple Steps to a Healthier Life® ( allows you to input personal information (such as age, height, weight and medical conditions) and more. In seconds, Simple Steps creates a personalized program including recommendations to address your health care concerns. You’ll get information custom-tailored to meet your needs, including tips on weight loss, reducing cholesterol, exercise, smoking cessation and more. It’s a great way to start on the road to a healthier you. Be sure to check with your doctor or other health care professional before starting any new program or regimen.

Flexible Spending Account

  • Aetna

Flexible spending accounts (FSAs) administered by Aetna allow you to save on current taxes by using pre-tax dollars to help pay for eligible, unreimbursed health care or dependent care expenses. You choose whether or not to fund your FSAs and with how much, up to certain limits. FSAs have a "use it or lose it" feature which means you must spend the full amount in your account each year for claims arising during that year or forfeit the remaining funds. There are two types of FSAs:

  • Health Care Spending Account – May be used to pay for eligible non-reimbursable medical expenses like deductibles, co-pays, over-the-counter medicine, and medical supplies.
  • Dependent Care Spending Account – May be used to pay for eligible daycare expenses that are necessary in order for you or your spouse to work.
