Although cyber crime headlines are often about major corporations, don't be misled: Smaller businesses are a favorite target of hackers, accounting for 77 percent of cyber breaches. Here are a few recent small business cyber-loss statistics:

More than half (55%) of businesses have been hacked.
Top targets: retail, and food and beverage businesses.
Types of data stolen: personal information, payment card numbers, authentication credentials (passwords and PINS), and bank account numbers.
Average price tag of a breach (defense, cost of settlement, crisis services): $3.7 million.
Average cost of legal defense arising from breach: $582,000.
Some 40% of breached businesses lost customers and business partners due to cyber crime.
