Many business owners think they only need to be concerned about flood coverage if they are located in areas at high risk of flooding, such as along a river, lake or ocean. Yet according to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), more than 20% of claims and one-third of flood disaster assistance occur for properties located outside high-risk flood areas. Just two of many possible reasons that past histories of flooding may not be accurate predictors of future losses are changing weather patterns and new construction in previously undeveloped areas.
Damage to your building could be the least of your problems from flood waters. Discuss with your agent possible preventative measures, coverage issues and just how large your exposure might be, based upon your operations, type of buildings, and their locations.
