Fall is a perfect time to create or update your home inventory — while you already are doing fall maintenance and preparing for winter.
According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), nearly half of U.S. consumers are insufficiently prepared — in terms of their insurance coverage — to deal with potential losses. An inventory of your property that includes pictures and receipts will help you file an insurance claim should disaster strike.
The NAIC reports that nearly half of consumers do not have inventories of their possessions. Of those who do have checklists, 32 percent have not taken any pictures, and 58 percent have no receipts to validate the costs of their possessions.
Many who have taken inventory of their personal property risk their efforts being in vain: 44 percent acknowledged that they did not have their inventory lists stored in remote locations.
