10/17/2011 - Fire drills uncommon among many homeowners

Many families have not practiced a fire drill.

While a majority of homeowners have fire alarms, few have conducted a home fire drill, a new survey reveals.

According to a survey conducted by polling company ORC International, just 28% of families with children under the age of 12 have performed a fire drill. Further, nearly 40% have never created or discussed a plan of action should there be a fire.

"Discussing the reality of home fires can sometimes be difficult for parents, but it's critical that every member of a family knows what do in the event of a fire," said Tom Harned, a property risk field manager and volunteer firefighter. "Any day is a good day to create a fire escape plan, but National Family Fire Drill Day is a perfect moment in time to make fire safety in the home a priority."

Though fire safety drills may not prevent fires from breaking out or from having to file a home insurance claim due to the damage it caused, they can help families avoid tragedy.
