10/14/2013 - Government report portrays the typical American home

The price paid for homes for sale appears to have increased in recent years.

A new report has been unveiled that describes some of the physical and financial characteristics of the modern-day home.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the median price of residential properties purchased today is approximately $110,000, up 2.3% from 2009, which was the last time a similar survey was conducted.

The report also revealed the median year occupied homes were built in and the percentage of houses that have central air conditioning. In the former, the median age of today's home is 39 years, and roughly 72.5% of properties have central air in the latter.

"The last five years remind us how central housing is to each of us personally, to the fiscal health of our cities and counties, and the national economy," said Kurt Usowski, deputy assistant secretary for economic affairs at the Department of Housing and Urban Development. "For 40 years, the American Housing Survey has provided a unique set of data that connects the detailed characteristics of who is living in homes to the detailed characteristics of the homes themselves."

While the vast majority of homeowners have smoke detectors, less than half (46%) have working carbon monoxide detectors. Having them in place can bring substantial homeowners insurance savings, as carbon monoxide poisoning remains a leading cause of unintentional death in the U.S. today, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
