8/18/2011 - New Honda Civic loses Consumer Reports' recommendation

Honda's new Civic failed to get good reviews.

After Honda redesigned its Civic LX, Consumer Reports says it can no longer recommend the vehicle to potential car buyers due to a number of flaws.

According to the product review magazine, the new Civic dropped 17 points in CR's review ratings to 61, which translates as "mediocre." The previous model was 78, or "very good."

"While other models like the Hyundai Elantra have gotten better after being redesigned, the Civic has dropped so much that now it ranks near the bottom of its category," said David Champion, senior director of CR's auto test center.

A number of features on the new Civic LX model didn't score as well this time around, including its handling, the quality of its interior, and road noise.

However, it did have some redeeming features, such as having a considerable amount of rear-seat room and getting 30 miles per gallon - second in its class.

Other traditional top performers also dropped in the latest ranking, which may impact buyers comparing vehicles and auto insurance rates.
