10/16/2013 - Poll: Sleep hard to come by on Sunday


A study finds Sunday isn’t an ideal day for many Americans in terms of sleep.

Perhaps due to the anticipation of a busy week at work, most Americans have trouble falling asleep on Sunday night than any other evening, a new poll reveals.

According to the study, which was done by survey provider Toluna Omnibus, the last night of the weekend is typically the one where most individuals run into the most frustration with respect to getting some shuteye. More than one-third - 39% - of respondents point to this period of the week as the worst one for rest. The next closest was Saturday night, cited by 19% of respondents.

"Today's 365/24/7, always connected society wreaks havoc on our body's clock," said Michael Breus, a clinical psychologist and sleep exert. "I recommend proactively changing behavior to lessen the effects of Sunday Night Sleeplessness, and implementing an overall good sleep hygiene program on Sundays and throughout the rest of the week."

He suggested trying natural sleep supplements, limiting caffeine intake after 2 p.m. and to maintain a regular sleep schedule.

Improper rest is one of the leading causes of motor vehicle accidents and auto insurance claims each year. The National Sleep Foundation reports that more than one-third of Americans say they have driven while in a drowsy state within the past 12 months.
