8/22/2012 - Remain pool aware as summer draws to a close
Even though the summer may be winding down as kids make their back-to-school plans, temperatures are still warm enough to continue swimming. With this in mind, parents need to be aware of the insurance implications that come with pools, according to the Insurance Information Institute.
Jeanne Salvatore, senior vice president and consumer spokesperson for the III, indicated that if parents are not careful, they can be held negligent if their child's friend injures themselves in their pool, or if anyone else for that matter.
"You can be sued if someone drowns or is injured in your pool even if they did not have your permission to be there," said Salvatore. "So it’s important to have the proper locks and safety equipment and to have appropriate liability insurance."
The III says pool owners can protect themselves from liability by creating several layers of protection, such as building a fence around the pool, not leaving toys in the water when no one is using them and to check around the pool for any hazards that may cause injury.
