5/3/2011 - Toyota: One million Priuses sold in the U.S.

The Pruis has sold well and received favorable grades in safety tests.

Due to the supply and manufacturing disruption after the Japan earthquake, Toyota recently announced that it may have to alter the launch date of its next Prius model, the Prius v. In the meantime, the original model is doing quite well in sales.

Toyota recently announced that the carmaker has sold more than one million Prius units in the U.S. since debuting several years ago. But, as Bob Carter, vice president and general manager of Toyota Division group said, the company is used to hearing good news about the fuel-efficient vehicle.

"Since the Prius went on sale 11 years ago, not a year has gone by when it hasn't been the number one selling hybrid vehicle in the U.S.," said Carter. "Prius has become synonymous with the word hybrid … it has accounted for more than 60 percent of hybrid passenger car sales so far this year."

Along with saving consumers money at the gas pump, the Prius may have also saved people money in their auto insurance premiums, as the 2010 model performed "good" in most of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's crash tests.
