1/9/2012 - Good visibility and tire function key to winter driving safety
There are approximately 1.2 million weather-related auto accidents in the U.S. each year, according to the American Meteorological Society. In light of this, automotive chain Pep Boys has released a list of things motorists may want to do before taking to the roadways this winter so they can avoid driving accidents and auto insurance
For instance, inspecting tires is crucial to safe driving. Making sure tires are in good shape can be done with a quick visual check. Motorists should look for signs of wear on tires, especially on the outside edges. If tread is worn here but not in other areas, it's an indication the tires may be misaligned. Motorists should have them properly balanced and also consider getting winter tires installed.
Visibility is an additional concern in the winter. To help make sure motorists can see clearly, the source recommends having headlights inspected, making sure they're free of obstructions, particularly road salt and grime that can accumulate in the winter months.
Drivers should also have their windshield wipers cleaned so that they don't smear residue when operating. This can be done by wiping them down with a mixture of rubbing alcohol and water, the source advises.
