5/10/2012 - IIHS announces latest Top Safety Pick
A new entry has been added to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's list of Top Safety Picks.
According to the IIHS, the 2012 Mazda CX-5 recently earned the Institute's Top Safety Pick award, thanks to performing well in safety and impact evaluations from the vehicle's front, side and rear, as well as in rollover testing.
The vehicle also fared well in roof strength, which was measured by pushing a metal plate against a corner of the vehicle's roof at a constant speed. The roof of the CX-5 proved capable of withstanding a force equal to nearly five and a half times the vehicle's weight. IIHS notes that any strength-to-weight ratio of four or greater earns a good rating.
The automotive safety organization indicates that the CX-5 is the second Mazda to qualify for the Top Safety Pick award since IIHS made the safety testing standards more rigorous in 2010. The other model to earn the distinction was the Mazda 3.
Motorists who are in the market to purchase a vehicle may want to consider its safety test rankings in their purchase decisions, as this is something auto insurance
providers often consider when assessing rates.
