1/18/2013 - IIHS names 2013 Top Safety Picks
If consumers intend to purchase a new car in the new year, they may want to consider one of the safest models available.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently named 13 cars as the best 2013 models when it comes to providing superior protection to drivers and passengers.
In order to earn IIHS' distinction as a Top Safety Pick, vehicles are put through a bevy of different crash tests from various points on the car, including frontal, side impact, rollover and rear.
Among this year's class of Top Safety Picks are the 2013 Acura TL, Dodge Avenger, Honda Accord 4-door and Kia Optima.
"Of the 29 models evaluated so far in our small overlap frontal crash test, these 13 cars offer the highest level of all-around crash protection," said Adrian Lund, president of IIHS.
He added that thanks to advancements in technology, the 2013 selections are even safer than previous years' award winners.
Motorists who select these cars may find that their auto insurance premiums are lower. As a general rule, the safer cars are considered to be by industry experts, the less costly they are to insure.
