12/17/2012 - Parking lot accidents surge during holidays
During the holiday season, not only do shoppers and commuters have to face the increased level of traffic, but they also have to endure mall parking lots, which are typically flooded with vehicles. And while most consumers are able to check the items off their wish lists without incident, some shoppers go home with something they didn't expect to get before they left - a damaged vehicle.
According to auto insurance
statistics from several providers, a considerable number of accidents that take place each year occur in parking lots. They're particularly common during the holiday season, when parking lots are often filled to the brim as consumers jockey for any parking space they can find.
For example, based on recent statistics, the number of parking-related auto insurance claims on Black Friday - billed as the busiest shopping season of the year - doubled between 2010 and 2011. In addition, nearly one-fourth of the auto claims made the day after Thanksgiving all resulted from accidents that took place in parking lots during the same stretch of time.
Insurance experts say that even if an accident only produces minor damage, it's wise for them to get in touch with their insurer, as incidents like these are important for their provider to know about.
In order to avoid parking lot accidents, motorists are advised not to speed, to be keenly aware of pedestrians that may be in crosswalks and to back out of parking spaces slowly and cautiously.
