6/7/2012 - Some of the more common misconceptions about auto insurance

Traffic violations will have a significant impact on insurance rates.

Just as there are a variety of auto insurance facts out there, there are just as many - if not more - auto insurance myths. To help separate fact from fiction, here are some of the more common misconceptions about coverage.

One of them is that every traffic citation affects auto insurance rates. While traffic violations can have an impact, they are not treated equally. For example, parking violations likely will not have the same effect as moving violations, such as speeding.

Another myth is the notion that car insurance covers everything on and in the vehicle itself. As a general rule, auto insurance covers medical bills and the physical makeup of the car should it be damaged in an accident. Homeowners insurance, meanwhile, may provide for possessions that are inside.

Finally, some are under the impression that carrying a bare minimum of coverage will be sufficient should they need to file a claim. However, this, too, is untrue, as a basic policy does not provide for theft, which is covered under the comprehensive portion of a policy.
