8/12/2011 - Toyota discusses new technology to help avoid collisions

A new crash avoidance system is being developed for Toyota.

Toyota is making a vehicle safety technology device that would decrease the risk of a head-on collision, The Associated Press reports.

The carmaker's safety innovations were demonstrated at a Tokyo-based automotive manufacturing plant.

Moritaka Yoshida, chief safety technology officer for Toyota, said the system will work through an installed radar system, called "millimeterwave," which will be installed at the front of the vehicle. The device will be capable of detecting whether something is in front of the car such as a pedestrian or another car. It will then adjust braking and steering in order to avoid a head-on collision.

"We must learn from accidents and keep making improvements in safety features," said Yoshida.

The system is still in development, and Toyota did not indicate when the feature would become available.
