4/3/2012 - Website names 2012's most fuel-efficient cars

The Ford Fiesta was ranked as a very fuel-efficient vehicle.

With gas prices soaring, many consumers are buying more fuel-efficient vehicles. To help shoppers find the most reliable gas-sipping automobiles on the market, Total Car Score has ranked the 2012 cars that have the best combined fuel economy and industry ratings.

"In this market, car buyers are more concerned than ever about fuel economy, but they also want a vehicle that is reliable and offers strong resale value," said Karl Brauer, editor in chief of the automotive research and price comparison website. "Our list includes only those 2012 vehicles that managed segment-leading MPG figures and earned a 'Total Car Score' above the segment average."

In the economy class, the website named the Ford Fiesta and Chevrolet Sonic as the most fuel-efficient, both getting 33 miles per gallon on the city and highway and receiving Total Car Scores of 77.07 and 74.61, respectively. For compact sedans, the Volkswagen Golf and Chevrolet Cruze took top billing, boasting 33 and 34 mpg and scores of 79.63 and 77.77, respectively.

In addition to saving consumers' gas money, consumers may also be able to find savings when they insure their vehicle, as auto insurance companies may offer discounted rates.
