11/20/2013 - Business owners – is your website secure

In 2011 alone, there were 855 reported data breaches and 175 million compromised records.

Although business data files are routinely stolen by internet hackers and thieves, the overwhelming majority of company executives believe that these incidents won't happen to them, based on the results of a recent poll.

Out of 2,700 business owners, more than 86% stated that they were confident that their website is secure and not at risk of being infiltrated by cyber criminals, according to a survey performed by the Small Business Authority. Only 14% indicated that they felt as though their website could use more protection.

Barry Sloane, president and CEO of the New York-based business services firm, said some business owners don't fully appreciate how prevalent so-called "hacktivists" are.

"We do believe that our independent business owners are not very concerned about cyber-security, even though they should be," said Sloane.

Former Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano made a rather ominous prediction about a potential cyber attack that, she stated, "will have a serious effect on our lives." Prior to resigning from her post on Sept. 6, Napolitano made some farewell remarks at the National Press Club in Washington on Aug. 27.

"Our country will, at some point, face a major cyber event that will have a serious effect on our lives, our economy, and the everyday functioning of our society," Napolitano said at the time. "While we build systems, protections and a framework to identify attacks and intrusions, share information with the private sector and across government and develop plans and capabilities to mitigate the damage, more must be done, and quickly."

In 2011 alone, there were 855 reported data breaches and 175 million compromised records. And in more than three-fourths of cases, they took place at small businesses. Selective's CyCurity® cyber-liability protection can help companies recover from the consequences that data breaches bring.
