8/20/2013 - National drunk driving crackdown August 16th – September 2nd

The NHTSA’s drunk driving initiative runs from late August through early September.

As summer winds its way to a close, motorists may want to ensure in the course of their celebrations that whoever is driving is sober, as police officers throughout the country are heightening their presence on highway and area roads.

Between August 16 and September 2, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is conducting its "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign, which focuses on inebriated drivers. Based on historic traffic and auto insurance data, violations and citations during these two weeks have often involved driving under the influence of alcohol, which remains a pervasive problem despite the risks associated with it.

Before getting behind the wheel, motorists are urged to stay off the road if they feel like they've had one too many, as reaction time and awareness can diminish severely when even small amounts of alcohol are in the bloodstream.

According to federal transportation data, alcohol plays a role in approximately 30% of the deadly highway accidents take place over the weekend. Additionally, alcohol impairment among motorists is approximately four times higher at night than it is during the day.
