12/11/2013 - Survey: Consumers respect liquor laws


Despite alcohol's availability, respondents pointed out that it is a one-of-a-kind product that not just anyone should be able to access.

Whether individuals choose to drink socially or remain sober, the vast majority of Americans are satisfied with how alcohol is regulated and how available it is in the commercial marketplace today, a new survey reveals.

The poll, which was conducted by the Center for Alcohol Policy, found that more than three-quarters of adults are pleased with the variety of products that they can purchase in stores and more than eight in 10 of those surveyed - 86% - said they typically don't have any problem whatsoever finding a specific drink that they enjoy, both for beer and liquor.

Despite alcohol's availability, at the same time, respondents also pointed out that it is a one-of-a-kind product that not just anyone should be able to access.

Patrick Lynch, current member of the CAP Advisory Council and former Rhode Island attorney general, noted that the compliance measures that are in place at supermarkets and specialty liquor stores are rules that consumers view as important and worthy of being followed.

"Americans overwhelmingly agree that alcohol is a unique product that needs to be regulated differently than other consumer products, and they also believe that today's system of alcohol regulation works to protect communities while supplying consumers with great variety," said Lynch. "This national survey also shows that people think it's important that decisions about alcohol are made at the local level by people who know the community."

Of course, in order to be able to sell alcohol, the proper licensing needs to be obtained, such as Class "A" for fermented malt beverages like beer and Class "B" for wine or liquor. This maintains the regulatory structures in place.
