9/21/2012 - College may bring insurance adjustments for students
Due to the vast amounts of gadgets and technological accessories students bring with them to college these days, updating a homeowners insurance
policy has never been more important than it is today, according to the Insurance Information Institute.
Jeanne Salvatore, senior vice president and consumer spokesperson for the III, indicated that professors and instructors often make obtaining certain technologies a requirement if students want to register in their classes.
"With e-books replacing notebooks and textbooks, curricula and classes going online, expensive electronics are not just a luxury, they are a necessity for many college students today," said Salvatore.
She added that parents and students might want to look at their existing homeowners or renters insurance
policies, as they may already include coverage for high-ticket items, such as laptops, tablets and desktop computers. At the same time, policyholders may want to consider obtaining a stand-alone policy. These plans may provide additional protection in the event an item becomes damaged over the course of a semester or school year.
