7/15/2011 - What homeowners can do to protect their properties
Insurance industry officials are finding more homeowners are coming to them asking about what they can do to keep their properties safe. And as Julie Rochman of the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety says, preparedness starts with people realizing just how damaging twisters can be.
"Tornadoes move very quickly and pack tremendously destructive power, as we have seen too often in devastated communities in several states this spring," said Rochman, president and CEO of IBHS. "However, as people build new - or rebuild destroyed homes - in tornado-prone areas, they should know that there are steps they can take to better protect their families and possessions from future windstorms."
Rochman said the best way people can give their home or business a fighting chance is to equip it with reinforcement features that go above and beyond code standards. This may include strengthening the connections that attach walls to the roof.
