7/18/2013 - Divorce more common among Americans 50 and over

There has been a sharp rise in the divorce rate in recent years.

As the summer rolls along, it's not unusual to see a considerable number of people heading to churches and chapels, not necessarily for worship but rather for matrimonial purposes. In fact, according to the National Association of Wedding Ministers, nearly a quarter of all weddings take place in the months of summer.

At the same time, though, a new report indicates that divorce is happening with greater frequency, particularly among baby boomers or those who are 50 years and older.

The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers reports that divorce attorneys have seen an increase in the number of clients requesting a divorce from their spouse, something that two-thirds of lawyers who responded to a recent poll attested to.

"Baby boomers have regularly been catalysts for social change and getting divorced in their later years appears to be one of the most recent trends," said Alton Abramowitz, president of the AAML.

He added that spouses often have to deal with a variety of issues that may require legal counsel, such as alimony, business interests and retirement accounts.

There are also some homeowners and renters insurance ramifications that partners have to consider, depending on whether they buy or rent. The Insurance Information Institute provides spouses with some tips for what they may want to review.
