11/26/2012 - Few business owners have cyber security contingency plans in place
Even though a considerable number of business owners use the internet regularly in their daily dealings, a new survey suggests many of them are not taking the proper precautions with regards to cyber security.
According to a recent poll conducted by the internet security firm Symantec, three in every four business owners say they believe they're not at risk of their information being hacked by cyber criminals. However, as many as 83% indicate they have not implemented any kind of cyber security plan to guard against a potential breach.
Michael Kaiser, executive director of the National Cyber Security Alliance, indicated that the results of the poll suggest many entrepreneurs have a false sense of security.
"We want U.S. small businesses to understand they cannot completely remain safe from cyber threats if they do not take the necessary precautions," said Kaiser. "A data breach or hacking incident can really harm [small- and medium-sized businesses] and unfortunately lead to a lack of trust from consumers, partners and suppliers."
