6/15/2012 - Insurance experts say it's the 'Year of the Roof'

A sturdy roof is a critical element of home safety.

With 2011 being a record-breaking year for property damage, 2012 has been dubbed "The Year of the Roof" by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety.

As IBHS notes, roofs tend to experience the most significant damage when severe weather strikes. In addition, when roofing systems fail, there is a high probability that the rest of the property will encounter significant damage, resulting in a major homeowners or business insurance claim.

Julie Rochman, president and CEO of IBHS, noted that the importance of maintaining the upkeep of a roof cannot be overestimated.

"The roof is a building’s first line of defense against the elements, yet it too often is also the most vulnerable point on a home or commercial building," said Rochman. "Roof cover damage occurs in the vast majority of wind-related property insurance claims. As a result, insurers replace and repair millions of roofs and roof components each year."

She added that later this year, IBHS will conduct a demonstration, designed to show how hurricane-force wind gusts can cause significant amounts of damage to roofs that are seemingly resistant to violent weather patterns and what property owners can do to reinforce the strength of their structures.
