1/10/2012 - Business owners should make floor mats a priority
As the winter season gets into gear, it's also the season for slips, trips and falls, which could pose a problem for small business owners.
According to the National Safety Council, business owners spend approximately $70 billion annually in workers compensation
and medical claims as a result of their customers and employees injuring themselves.
To avoid filing businessowners insurance
claims, the National Floor Safety Institute president says installing floor mats near business entry points are crucial.
"A matting system that uses scraper mats outside entranceways and walk-offs just inside of them can prevent most soiling and moisture from entering a facility, and reduce or eliminate the potential for slip, trip, and fall accidents," said Russell Kendzior, who is also the founder of the NFSI.
In order to be truly effective, Kendzior says floor mats must have plenty of traction, have slip-resistant backing so it adheres to the floors and be cleaned regularly.
He added that mats are businesses' best line of defense to preventing employees from injuring themselves and avoiding workers compensation insurance claims.
