11/29/2012 - Most Americans say pets are part of the family
A considerable number of Americans have such a love for their dogs, many consider them to be members of the family.
According to a recent survey conducted by The Harris Poll, nine in ten respondents - 91% - said they treated their pooch as if they were a part of the family. Of these people, more than half said they demonstrated their affection by letting their pet sleep with them, 31% indicated they will often buy a present for them for a holiday and just fewer than 20% purchased their canines a birthday gift.
There appears to be a limit, however, when it comes to the places they'll have their dogs tag along. Harris found that approximately 85% said they have never taken their pet to work with them and generally keep them at home.
It's in these confines that dogs can occasionally act out and perhaps unintentionally hurt someone. The Insurance Information Institute reports that more than one-third of all homeowners insurance
liability claims in 2011 were related to dog bites.
