10/8/2013 - Keep a lid on kitchen fires

Fire departments responded to approximately 156,600 cooking-related fires between 2007 and 2011.

While there are a variety of ways in which a fire can take place in a home - more fires occur as a result of cooking than any other single factor.  This is why making safety precautions a focus 24 hours a day, seven days a week is the message the National Fire Protection Association wants to communicate this year during Fire Prevention Week.

According to recent numbers, fire departments responded to approximately 156,600 cooking-related fires between 2007 and 2011 in the U.S. Damage totals were significant, costing $853 million in direct losses, 400 fatalities and more than 5,000 injuries.

While many might associate these scalds with ranges and stove tops, a number of them also occur with the microwave. NFPA data indicates that in 2011 alone, nearly half of the microwave oven injuries that occurred were treated in the emergency room.

To help families avoid severe losses that may result in a homeowners insurance claim, the NFPA provides a variety of tips and recommendations for what to do when cooking at home as well as what to do should a cooking fire occur.
