GREGORY E. MURPHY

Gregory E. Murphy has served as chairman and chief executive officer since September 2013, and was chairman, president and chief executive officer of Selective Insurance Group, Inc. from 2000 to September 2013. He joined the company in 1980 and held a series of increasingly senior positions, including chief financial officer, chief operating officer, and president and chief executive officer.
Mr. Murphy has played a key role in Selective’s growth to a super-regional property casualty company. The company owns ten customer-focused insurance companies rated “A” (Excellent) and is ranked as the 42nd largest property casualty group in the United States by A.M. Best Co. Selective provides value-added standard lines products and services to businesses, public entities and individuals in 22 primary Eastern and Midwestern states. In 2012, the company expanded into excess and surplus lines, which it writes in all 50 states. Selective also is the 5th largest “Write Your Own” carrier in the National Flood Insurance Program.
Mr. Murphy is a strong advocate of the independent insurance agent and has promoted Selective’s “high-tech, high touch” business model that powerfully combines a unique field-based underwriting and claims model with leading edge agency automation technology.
A graduate of Boston College with a B.S. in Accounting, Mr. Murphy is a Certified Public Accountant and completed both the Harvard Advanced Management Program and an M.I.T. Sloan School of Management Executive Program. He is chairman of the Board of Directors for the Insurance Information Institute and is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Insurance Association and the Board of Overseers at St. John’s University School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science.
