Sandy: Major Surprise, but No Fall Fluke

Last October's Superstorm Sandy caused unprecedented catastrophic damage and destruction. If you think that a hurricane or tropical storm striking the upper Atlantic Coast or New England is a historical oddity, especially at this time of year, consider just these storms from the last 10 years:

  • September 2005: Tropical Storm Ophelia brought gusty winds and heavy rainfall to Massachusetts.
  • October 2005: Remnants of Tropical Storm Tammy contributed to massive flooding in the Northeast.
  • November 2007: Hurricane Noel struck Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Maine, bringing heavy rainfall, high seas, and coastal flooding that caused widespread power outages.
  • November 2009: Hurricane Ida brought severe flooding, beach erosion, and strong winds as far north as New Jersey.
  • August 2011: Hurricane Irene produced high winds, heavy rains, and flash flooding in western New England.

Moral of the story? When it comes to severe weather and the resultant windstorm and flood damages: Never assume. Be prepared. Be certain your insurance protection is adequate and ready to respond.
