How did you get into your role? Tell us about your career path.
My insurance journey is an unexpected one – from wrenches to claims. I ventured down many different paths, including joining the Marine Corps and spending six years as an enlisted infantryman, conducting punch list work for a residential home builder, working at an auto shop turning a wrench, and more. As my family grew, my wife and I decided that looking into remote work would be beneficial, allowing me to be home with our children more. After three years with a mechanical warranty inspection company, I found myself looking for career growth, and that's when I found a home at Selective. I began in the Service department as an Express Auto Adjuster and, within a few months, was promoted to an Alt Auto Adjuster. Just a year later, I moved into the General Liability department with Selective. Although my career path has not been traditional, everything I have learned professionally and personally has benefited me.
How would you describe your role, and what does a typical day look like?
I navigate the complexities of liability evaluation, policy explanations, and reassuring worried claimants. It's challenging and demanding, but I've found fulfillment in assisting others during difficult times. I often explain to insureds why they are considered liable for the accident when they disagree. Sometimes, I listen to someone and assure them that even though their car is damaged, it is not the end of the world. It may be hectic and sometimes chaotic, but I have found this is just the world of automotive claims.
What are some of the key lessons you've learned on your career journey?
One of the key lessons I've learned in my career is the importance of empathy and maintaining composure, saying, "The best thing to remember at the end of the day is that somewhere there is an individual out there who you helped come out on top of a catastrophic event in their life." Understanding that losing a vehicle could leave people stranded and feeling overwhelmed, I've made it my mission to show compassion to customers, all while managing my own emotions. In addition, I've learned that self-care and seeking guidance from peers are critical to preventing burnout.
Who or what inspires you to do your best?
My family is what inspires me to do my best. The father figures in my life set a great example of hard work, caring for family, and providing guidance through how they've acted and lived. As a father of four daughters, I want to make sure that I set an example for them to be successful in everything they do.
