BRANCHVILLE, N.J., March 1, 2022 – Selective Insurance announced today that a team of students from Appalachian State University won the company’s 3rd annual College Competition, which challenges university teams from across the country to operate a virtual insurance agency.

“Each year, we see students approach Selective’s College Competition strategically, prioritizing innovation, efficiency, and learning,” said Robert Redden, Vice President, Distribution Strategies and Insurance Learning Services. “Insurance is a complex industry, and this year’s participants worked extremely hard and gained new insights and experiences that will help shape their future insurance careers. Congratulations to the winning team from Appalachian State University and all of the participating teams.”

Selective’s College Competition brings together teams of college students to obtain valuable insurance career-building experience and networking opportunities with the guidance and mentorship of industry experts from Selective and independent insurance agencies. This year’s participating teams from Appalachian State University, Illinois State University, Indiana State University, Le Moyne College, Middle Tennessee State University, and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte were comprised of students majoring in Risk Management, Insurance, Business, Actuarial Science, Sales, or Finance. Using PriSim’s Agency Challenge^TM computerized business solution, each team ran a simulated insurance agency and competed in weekly challenges that helped build their understanding of insurance carriers, customer service, staffing, sales, and financial management.

The Indiana State University team placed second, while the University of North Carolina - Charlotte team came in third place. Selective will be making monetary donations to support the top three teams’ chapters of Gamma Iota Sigma, an international professional fraternity organized to promote, encourage, and sustain student interest in insurance, risk management, and actuarial science as professions.

The Selective College Competition takes place during February, which is Insurance Careers Month, and helps showcase the dynamic and rewarding careers available within the insurance industry.
