Reflections on Women in the Insurance Industry in 2023

Women’s History Month, celebrated every March, honors and celebrates the struggles and achievements of American women throughout the history of the United States, including those who campaigned for equal rights. Today, women have become leaders in nearly every social and economic space, from government and entertainment to academia and business.

At Selective, we partner with countless women insurance agents who make a difference in the industry and the communities we serve. One such leader is Tricia Pucek, Chief Financial Officer of The Horton Group, who is helping to create opportunities and provide mentorship and support for women pursuing insurance careers.

Tricia Pucek's Story

How I Began My Mentoring Journey

I have worked in insurance for over 15 years. Throughout this journey, I received valuable mentorship that helped me drive my career forward and succeed in ways I never imagined. This support gave me the confidence to step out of my comfort zone, assume new responsibilities, and pave my own path to leadership. At this stage, I feel it’s incumbent on me to “pay it forward” and help others find their success.

Helping To Foster Change In The Insurance Industry

Sometimes, I am the only woman in a meeting or on a team, and I suspect many other women would say similarly. I am working to change this experience. By working together, we must ensure that emerging women leaders have the training, mentorship, and, most importantly, the support to succeed.

Recently, I had the fortune to mentor and support students in Selective’s annual College Competition, which helps raise awareness on college campuses about insurance career opportunities. It was uplifting to see women participating in the program – working with them to prepare for an insurance industry career was as educational for me as it was for them!

At The Horton Group, we recognize that the support women need may look different than it does for men. With this knowledge and a shared commitment to taking action that drives change, we launched a group named Her Horton. Our goal is to nurture women leaders. We also placed DE&I at the forefront of many other agency initiatives in recent years.

These efforts are the pebble that creates a ripple, and I believe that ripple will create a wave of more women in insurance and leadership roles.

Paying It Forward

I always jump at an opportunity to teach and mentor others. I love sharing my knowledge and experiences with the next generation of insurance professionals, hoping they will find the connection I did to this industry.
